Since 2014, he has repeatedly participated in the ATO, performing combat and special tasks in the area of the Joint Forces Operation (JFO). He led the combined units of the National Guard of Ukraine within the respective groupings of the Joint Forces. In 2018, he graduated from the National Academy of the National Guard of Ukraine. He transferred to a new place of service from the 9th Operational Assignment Regiment of the National Guard. Dmytro Apukhtin has a total military service of 25 years. On March 3, 2022, Colonel Apukhtin detected an enemy advanced group in a designated direction. By skillfully organizing the defense and assigning fire tasks to each soldier, Dmytro Oleksandrovych heroically engaged in battle. During the fight, thanks to the officer's competent leadership, the subordinate personnel destroyed one unit of enemy armored vehicles. On March 5, 2022, the enemy again attempted to break through the defense and advance towards Mariupol, leading to a battle between the military personnel and the occupiers, resulting in the destruction of two units of armored vehicles and about 20 Russian occupiers. On March 10, 2022, while carrying out a combat mission to organize defense and prevent the enemy from advancing towards Mariupol, the personnel under Colonel Apukhtin's command halted the movement of an enemy mechanized column, destroying two enemy BMP-2s and enemy personnel. On March 12, 2022, at a checkpoint near Mariupol, during an enemy column's advance, Dmytro Apukhtin skillfully maneuvered the unit’s forces and, at the cost of his own life, stopped the enemy's advance, preventing them from penetrating deeper into the city.
