Hennadii B. Horshkov

Hennadiy Borysovych Horshkov was born on June 14, 1973, in the Odesa region. Hennadiy's life path was very difficult; he lost his wife and was left with a 4-year-old daughter, Hannusia, and a 2-year-old son, Andriyko. For Hennadiy Horshkov, family was above all. He never remarried and, together with his mother, raised his children and completely immersed himself in them. Hennadiy Borysovych was an exemplary father, raising good children. According to educator Tetiana Ihnatkina, Hanna and Andriy grew up to be sincere and genuine people. Despite the hardships, their father did everything to ensure that his children received a decent education. Hanna graduated from the Izmail State Humanitarian University, earning a degree as a physical education teacher and social worker, while her brother attended the Izmail Higher Vocational School and entered the Danube Institute of Water Transport at the State University of Infrastructure and Technologies. As their father dreamed, the son aspires to become a sailor. Hennadiy Borysovych has a granddaughter, Sofiika. She will know her grandfather through her mother's memories and from a few photographs. Hanna deeply regrets that her father will never see how Sofia takes her first steps, goes to school, or gets married. The defender served in the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine but retired 15 years ago with the rank of midshipman and later worked as a cable technician at "Ukrtelecom." After the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, he was called up for mobilization to the ranks of the border guards. Since April 19, 2023, as part of a combat unit of the 1st Border Detachment of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, Hennadiy Horshkov participated in the defense of the city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region. While at observation posts under continuous shelling, thanks to the determination and initiative of the border guard, many enemy targets were identified and skillfully destroyed by the defenders. Hennadiy Borysovych used all means to detect enemy invading groups, allowing the Ukrainian defenders to effectively neutralize the enemy and their equipment. On May 12, 2023, while at an observation post, Master Sergeant Hennadiy Horshkov was killed during a massive artillery shelling of positions and a subsequent assault by the invaders.
