Since July 3, 2023, Hryhorii Dupenko, as part of the 3rd Border Guard Rapid Response Command of the 15th Mobile Border Detachment, was deployed to carry out combat missions to repel the Russian Federation's offensive in the Kupiansk direction, in Kharkiv region. On August 21, 2023, an assault group, which included Senior Sergeant Hryhorii Dupenko, began an assault on the positions of the Russian Federation's troops near the village of Serhiivka in the Svatove district of Luhansk region. Thanks to the coordinated actions of the soldiers in the assault group, the occupiers were forced out of their positions and suffered significant losses in personnel and equipment, after which the border guards secured their position for further defense and cover for other assault groups. Hryhorii Dupenko covered the retreat of wounded soldiers, as well as soldiers of the National Guard of Ukraine, with whom they were carrying out joint missions. He held the position against enemy attacks during mortar and artillery shelling, but nearby, an artillery shell exploded, resulting in the soldier receiving multiple injuries incompatible with life.
