After his compulsory military service, he decided to become a military man. He graduated from the Kharkiv University of Air Force and was assigned to serve in Sevastopol. On March 22, just a few hours before the assault on the military unit by Russian occupation forces and their accomplices from the Crimean "self-defense," he married Halyna, who worked as a brigade doctor. Their wedding during the siege was covered by the media. ₴Senior Lieutenant Ivan Benera was buried in the village cemetery. From the culture house, where the farewell to the fallen took place, to the cemetery, the funeral procession was nearly a kilometer long. Speeches were made by Major General Ihor Yakushevych, Lieutenant Colonel Yevhen Yalichev, military chaplain Vitaliy Papushoy, former teacher of the Hero Svitlana Polishchuk, village head Volodymyr Kalnytskyi, and the first deputy head of the regional State Land Agency in Vinnytsia region Oleksandr Korolyuk. From the district and city authorities, the funeral was attended by the first deputy head of the district state administration Anatoliy Dolovanyuk, head of the district council Volodymyr Dzvelyuk and his deputy Arkadiy Sobchenko, deputy mayor of Nemyriv Mykhailo Kremenuk. To bid farewell to his comrade-in-arms, the people's deputy of Ukraine, first-class military pilot, colonel of the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, commander of the 204th Tactical Aviation Brigade Yuliy Mamchur came.
