Vasyl S. Hrechukh

Vasyl Semenovych Hrechukh was born on July 21, 1973, in the village of Nyzhnie Bolotne, Irshavskyi District, Zakarpattia Region. In 1991, he graduated from Nyzhnie Bolotne Secondary School I-III levels. Since the beginning of the full-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine, soldier Vasyl Hrechukh was called up for mobilization to the 9th Border Detachment of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. From February to May 2022, Vasyl defended the Zhytomyr region from Russian invaders. In May 2022, soldier Vasyl Hrechukh was transferred for further combat against the enemy to the 3rd Border Detachment of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. On February 16, 2023, enemy assault groups once again attempted to break through the defenders' defense in the area of the city of Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast. The enemy changed its combat tactics and began to storm the positions of Ukrainian defenders in small groups. Vasyl Hrechukh, as part of a mortar crew, provided cover for the border guards. As a result of the battle, the enemy suffered losses and retreated but began artillery shelling of Ukrainian positions, during which Vasyl Hrechukh received a fatal wound. For personal courage and selfless actions demonstrated in the defense of the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and loyalty to the military oath, soldier Vasyl Semenovych Hrechukh was posthumously awarded the Order of "For Courage" of the III degree.
