- On February 27, 2022, during the battles for Bucha, Ukrainian volunteer and ATO veteran Volodymyr Kovalsky (call sign 'Engineer') was killed. He was 38 years old. As early as 2015, he had lost both of his legs in the war. Volodymyr had been fond of military affairs since his youth. While studying at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, he simultaneously graduated from the military department. Engineer actively participated in the Revolution of Dignity. In 2015, he joined the 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Prince Roman the Great. He started as a political officer and later became a commander. During a combat mission, the man stepped on an enemy mine and lost both legs. His wife Kateryna was eight months pregnant at the time. Volodymyr's desire to live was so strong that by the time of her delivery, he was already walking on temporary prostheses. He underwent rehabilitation, started a business and took up sports. He participated in competitions among adaptive athletes at the 'Games of Heroes'. He received land, built a house, and opened a car service station where he repaired engines. In February 2022, without waiting for the occupiers to enter his city, Engineer was one of the first to volunteer and joined the public organization 'Bucha Watch'. Together with other volunteers, Volodymyr organized the defense of the city, determined combat positions. On February 27, 2022, one of the fiercest battles in Bucha near the 'Novus' supermarket began. The guys destroyed two enemy BMDs and inflicted significant casualties. However, the battle was unequal, and they had to retreat. Volodymyr Kovalsky remained behind. His last words were: "Go, guys, I'll cover you." He was one of the first to fall in the battle for Bucha. The man was survived by his wife and son. Volodymyr Kovalsky was posthumously awarded the title of 'Honorary Citizen of the City'.Memory Platform 'Memorial'
