His last position was commander of a combat vehicle - commander of a squad of the 1st platoon of the 1st company of the 1st mechanized battalion of the 53rd separate mechanized brigade of the Operational Command "East" of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (military unit A0536 (field post V0927), cities of Sievierodonetsk/Lysychansk in Luhansk region). On July 28, 2018, a sabotage and reconnaissance group of the enemy consisting of up to 15 militants attempted to seize one of the positions of the Ukrainian military near the village of Krymske in the Novoaidar district of Luhansk region, which is on the right bank of the Siverskyi Donets River. Four soldiers who were at the observation post engaged in battle with superior enemy forces and held them off until a reserve group led by the company commander arrived to assist. During the battle, senior soldier Yurii Dzhengera and soldier Vasyl Plotnikov were killed, receiving fatal gunshot wounds. The other two soldiers sustained moderate injuries and were evacuated. After receiving a decisive rebuff, the enemy, under heavy fire from Ukrainian troops, retreated under the cover of their artillery.
