Leonid V. Shevchuk (Chechen)

Born on April 13, 1985, in the city of Vinnytsia. Graduated from general education school No. 10 in Vinnytsia.$Served mandatory military service in the 25th Separate Airborne Brigade of the Air Assault Forces of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (military unit A1126, the urban-type settlement of Hvardiyske, Novomoskovsk district, Dnipropetrovsk region).$In August 2014, mobilized into the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Served in the 90th Separate Airborne Battalion of the 95th Separate Airborne Brigade of the High Mobility Airborne Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (since the fall of 2014, the 90th Separate Airborne Battalion has been part of the 81st Separate Airborne Brigade of the High Mobility Airborne Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine - military unit V1611, the city of Kostiantynivka, Donetsk region).$Since November 20, 2014, participated in the anti-terrorist operation in eastern Ukraine. Participant in the defense of the International Airport "Donetsk".$On January 20, 2015, paratroopers of the 90th Separate Airborne Battalion left on three MT-LB transporters to the new terminal of the International Airport "Donetsk" for the rotation of personnel and the evacuation of the wounded. In conditions of dense fog and lack of communication, which was "jammed" by Russian armed formations, the transporter in which soldier Shevchuk was located came under fire from militants. During the battle, the driver-mechanic was killed and fell on the control levers, causing the MT-LB to crash into the airport's structural elements and explode. As a result of the explosion, soldier Shevchuk was killed. Along with him, senior sergeant Zahuba, sergeant Buyluk, junior sergeant Zulinsky, junior sergeant Chupilka, and soldier Franyshyn were killed.$Initially, it was believed that Leonid Shevchuk had been captured, then he was declared missing. On March 31, 2015, his body was identified through DNA testing.$On April 3, 2015, he was buried at the Alley of Heroes in the Central Cemetery of Vinnytsia.
